It is the most commonly used reduced voltage starter as it is the cheapest starter among all. In this method, induction motor is connected in star during start and delta while running with rated speeds. These starters are designed to run on delta connected stator of an induction motor. The schematic diagram of this starter is shown in figure below.

The starter motor is powered by the car's main 12 volt battery. To turn over the engine, the starter motor requires high electric current, which means the battery has to have sufficient power.

The DOL starter is made of a circuit breaker or MCCB or fuse, an overload relay and contactor or coil. The circuit breaker is used for protection against short circuits while the overload relay protects the motor from overloading. The contactor is used for starting and stopping the motor where the green and red buttons are connected.
The control circuit is separate from the motor circuit. The control circuit may not be at the same voltage as the power circuit. When the voltage of the control and power circuits is the same, it is referred to as mon Control. If the volt ages are different, it is called Separate Control. Figure 4. This motor control application can also be accomplished with a PLC. In the following example, a normally open Start pushbutton is wired to the first input (I0.0), a normally closed Stop pushbutton is wired to the second input (I0.1), and normally closed overload relay contacts (part of the motor starter) are connected to the third input (I0.2).

Answer: Probably the starter motor was at the end of its service life. But this can also be a problem with the starting circuit. Applications with a load torque higher than 50 % of the motor rated torque will not be able to start using the start delta starter. Low Starting Torque: The star delta (wye delta) starting method controls whether the lead connections from the motor are configured in a star or delta electrical connection.
